China builds the world’s largest deep sea telescope to hunt for elusive neutrinos

In China, scientists are constructing the world’s largest “ghost particle” detector 11,500 feet (3,500 meters) beneath the ocean’s surface. This enormous project, known as the Tropical Deep-sea Neutrino Telescope (TRIDENT) or “Hai ling” (“Ocean Bell” in Chinese), will be affixed to the seabed in the Western Pacific Ocean. When it’s completed in 2030, TRIDENT will search for rare flashes of light produced by elusive particles as they momentarily materialize in the ocean’s depths. It’s worth noting that every second, approximately 100 billion ghost particles, or neutrinos, traverse each square centimeter of our bodies. However, due to their lack of electrical charge and nearly negligible mass, neutrinos have minimal interactions with other forms of matter, living up to their enigmatic moniker.
