At the Technicolor Design Office we have been working hard last months on the design of a new generation of gateways & wifi extenders. A new product range that will bring new services such as the ability to use conversational voice interface to configure network settings or diagnose technical problems. The goal is to improve the internet experience at home.

This initiative is part of a new collaboration between Technicolor and Amazon (AWS Greengrass & Alexa Voice Services) to bring the power of the cloud to edge devices in the home, like gateways & extenders. It builds a bridge between cloud and edge technology that will act as a force-multiplier for building new services throughout the home.

Usually gateways, extenders and network devices are technical products that suffer from a lack of sense from a human perspective. The majority of current technical object designs are solely driven by technological constraints and do not take any human values or context into consideration.

We believe that the real value of a product is how you feel about it. And it goes far beyond its technical specifications or performance, reaching to human emotion, meaning, perception, relationship and context.

That was a challenge we set to ourselves at the Technicolor Design Office.

The first expression of this approach is a conversational wifi lamp fully integrated into the home context. With its archetypal and iconic shape this lamp will perfectly sit at the very core of each home living spaces, quietly providing a service platform such as wifi and voice interaction.
