Health Class

9th Grade

Standard 1.7: Propose ways to reduce or prevent injuries and health problems.

To start off students will read chapter 1 in A Long Walk to Water. In this chapter Nya is walking in the heat of the Sahara with no water. The importance of having students read this chapter is to show students the effects of heat on the body without having water. While students are reading they will be doing independent reading out of 50 Instructional Routines. To start off the independent reading I will be reading the first page aloud to the class.

After students read the chapter, I will be showing them a Powerpoint on heatstroke and dehydration. During the Powerpoint we will be having a class discussion relating it to the situation Nya is in. Lastly, students will be writing a short essay on a time where they experienced extreme heat and what they did or didn’t do to make sure they were hydrated based on the Powerpoint I presented. Also students will get the chance to come up in front of the class and tell their story.
