Modeling events in ALWTW

In this lesson that goes from writing to a reading or oral communication I decided to go with the idea of modeling certain aspects in ALWTW. When the students get there book before this lesson they will already know to be thinking of how this book could relate to mathematics. In this lesson after we have finished the book I will instruct the students to write at least two things or events that happened in the book that could be modeled by a mathematical equation or representation. Also have the students put an explanation on how they will be able to model the events that they have chosen. Then I will have the students post each of their ideas and explanations on google docs where everyone in the class including myself will be able to see them. Once the students post there ideas online I will bring up the google docs on the smart board and have a oral discussion on how each of the students modeling ideas could be strengthen. I will also have a post and explanations of the certain things that I took out of the book as well. Then I will split the students up in to groups and assign them an event have them model whatever event is assigned to their group. The students will submit their results on the google docs as well. When all the groups are finished I can bring up all of the different techniques and have each student come up and explain their groups thought process. This pertains to the cloud technology, google docs is a cloud application. I picked this technology because I think it makes it easier for the students to be able to reference the teachers and the students ideas without having to keep asking. If they have access to a computer then they can just reference the google doc that is shared with the entire class. It also makes it easier for the teacher to bring up everyone’s ideas without them having to individually come up in writing they are all just there.

The grand challenge that this connects to is understanding the mysteries of the world. This is because the students are having to model real life situations in the book. I think it will help them apply mathematics to the real world. Which in turn will help them have better knowledge of the way things work in the real world. They are understanding the mystery of how or why something in the real world is the way it is.
