Should We Be Worried?

Technology and the Future of Work

In some cases, technology has taken the jobs of people. For example, many assembly lines who used to be run/worked on by people lost their jobs because robots and technology was able to do it faster and more efficient. In Grand Island, New York, the toll booths used to have cashiers. Now, they got rid of the toll booths and all the payment in online. With technology advancing so quickly in the field of medicine, should we be worried about losing those jobs as well?

Although we live in a world of technology, jobs in the medicine field are safe.

For example, in Japan, there are robots that work in homes for the elderly and take care of them just like humans would. Nurses who take care of the elderly not only need to care for these people physically, but also emotionally. That is something robots will never have. They will also never have the “human touch” that gives comfort to these elderly people. Although these robots do help nurses, they will never actually take the role of them.

Also, like I have been saying in previous posts, robots can perform surgery. They cannot perform all surgery, though. A lot of work has gone into these robots and a lot of testing, but that doesn’t mean something will never go wrong. There is a robot who can tell surgeons during spinal surgery where to drill holes in the spine, and drill the holes themselves. Although they are capable, surgeons prefer to do it themselves just because that one screw up could be so detrimental to the patient. We will always need an actual human in the operating room, no matter how advanced we get.

Although there is a lot of money and research being put into these robot surgeons and their advancements, there is no one who is trying to create a robot that can do these tasks themselves. Like the nurse robots, they are helpful, but they are not interchangeable with the human. They are just a helpful addition.
