6 Things to Consider Before Buying a Laptop for Programming: A Software Engineer’s Experience and Suggestions
As a Software or Web developer, choosing the right laptop for your work is crucial. While some may think that high-end laptops are necessary to build web applications or software product, that’s not always the case. If you’re on a budget, you can still find a laptop with the minimum requirements to get the job done.
As someone with three years of experience in the tech industry, I’m here to share my insights on what specs to look for before buying a laptop for your career and work.
1. Processor
Invest in a laptop with a latest-generation Intel Core i5 processor or AMD Ryzen that will last for the long haul. If you prefer a MacBook, the M1 chip is an adequate choice.
2. RAM
Get a minimum of 8GB RAM, and make sure it’s upgradeable for future needs.
3. SSD/HDD
A minimum of 256GB SSD is recommended, but if you don’t plan to use additional storage, you should go for 512GB SSD. Check that the slot is upgradeable.
4. Graphics Card
In the realm of deep learning and machine learning projects, NVIDIA GPUs are the favored choice due to their excellent performance, support for popular deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow and PyTorch, and software tools such as CUDA and cuDNN, which accelerate deep learning computations.
On the other hand, AMD Ryzen GPUs are powerful for general computing tasks and are commonly used in the gaming and desktop computing markets. However, they may not provide the same level of support and compatibility with deep learning frameworks and libraries as NVIDIA GPUs do. Therefore, if you’re a data scientist or machine learning engineer, it’s advisable to opt for NVIDIA RTX graphics cards.
For programmers or developers who require less demanding graphics processing, entry-level dedicated NVIDIA graphics or shared Intel IRIS xe graphics would be sufficient.
5. Display
For general UI/UX and web development work, a display with a resolution of 1920x1080 (Full HD) is usually sufficient. However, some professionals may prefer a higher resolution display, such as 2560x1440 (QHD) or even 3840x2160 (4K) for more detailed visuals.
It’s important to consider the color accuracy and gamut of the display, as accurate color reproduction is essential for design work. A display with an sRGB color gamut of at least 99% is recommended for professionals.
6. OS
Choose an operating system you’re comfortable with, such as Ubuntu, Windows 11 and macOS.
Now, let me share my own experience. Recently, I purchased a Lenovo Ideapad 5 for my work purpose. It features a Core i5 11th gen processor, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, FHD IPS display, and both shared Intel IRIS xe and dedicated NVIDIA MX450 graphics.
This laptop has been a fantastic choice for my needs, and I highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a new laptop. This machine cost me around $850.
However, I had difficulty finding the exact version of this laptop on Amazon and couldn’t find a trustworthy seller. So, I would recommend searching for it at a nearby Lenovo shop instead of buying it from Amazon.
