As we delve into the realm of artificial intelligence, it’s clear that the human brain remains a towering benchmark of complexity and efficiency, particularly when it comes to processing irregular information and discerning the underlying meanings of words and actions. This complexity is what drives the pursuit of cognitive AI, a field that promises a wealth of practical applications by mimicking the nuanced capabilities of the human mind.

“Studying what was known about the human brain and people had just begun to make simple models of how the brain might be operating. There was a very seminal paper of McCulloch and Pitts in which they had proposed this idea of a simplified model of a neuron and how you could assemble these together into more elaborate circuits which could accomplish some significant computational feats. So there was the beginning of a theory of how the brain might work. And it seemed to me in particular that vision as a subset of our cognitive skills was an area which was sufficiently well delineated that it didn’t involve having to solve the problems of general AI and the entire thought processes of the brain.” watch the whole exclusive interview with Prof. David Mumford here:

My personal journey with AI actually started five years ago, 2018, just around this time, November, when a recruiter called me and talked to me about DMAI, Dark Matter Artificial Intelligence, and that’s when I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Mark Nisberg. Mark got his PhD from Harvard University with Prof. David Mumford, one of the legends in the field. So without further due, I’d like to welcome Dr. Mark Nisberg, who is the executive director of Human Compatible AI Center at University of California, Berkeley. So #goBears.

For those intrigued by the promises and challenges of cognitive AI, the full discussion led by Dr. Nisberg is a must-watch. The video delves deeper into the intricacies of AI development and the ongoing quest to create systems that can rival the human brain’s capabilities.
