Why miners approach in blockchain may solve IP copyright issue in AI

As we predicted in the 2023 State of AI Report, there have been a series of personal lawsuits over IP rights of various data sources, mostly images.

On October 23 artists sued Stable Diffusion, MidJourney and DevianArt over infringement of copyrights.(http://bit.ly/42cYlfo). Also commercial cases (Shutterstock and NYT vs Open AI) etc.

Now that we have the problem, how do we solve it?

I wrote before about the ‘hacker economy’: essentially the concept of being paid a bounty if you ‘find a bug/error’ and that kind of mechanism may be relevant for AI tools: if an artist is providing a new ‘style’ (via images) not present in the AI model, then such artist may be entitled a ‘bounty’ in the same way the ethical hacker is for debugging a software.

Find the article here : https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/ai-force-hacker-economy-jobs-just-yet-andrea-isoni-cmeje/?trackingId=uqMlnS%2BGSl2XINzt9EyGWA%3D%3D

I still very much believe this is the way to solve it: someone either debug/improve a code (LLM or not) or provide new data (artistic style etc.) it has to be paid. Otherwise it will not happen.

Now, how to implement the ‘mechanism’ to exchange money/data at speed?

I stress at speed, since we cannot expect any single artist to transact a legal document before exchanging his/her style or images into an AI system for training. Too slow.

The answer is the miner mechanism and the underline blockchain.

If you are familiar with bitcoin or any other blockchain, you will know that to actually verify//audit the ledger (essentially the transactions’ record) is free or errors, miners are paid.

The same mechanism can be adopted here: if you have an AI model or LLM or some sort and you put it in a blockchain github.

Now the same LLM can be improved, more data can be trained into etc. for these cases ‘miners’ can ‘subscribe’ to be ‘miners’ of such a specific AI model. And get a reward (a token coin of the blockchain).

In this way, IF the interaction and usability of the system is simple enough, everyone gets rewarded.

That’s why you see systems like bittensor coming along. And watch out, you will have more.
