Has twitter lost its magic?

Twitter please don’t be like Facebook

I have been using Twitter since 2009 and I have seen how it has changed one time having a public timeline with few tweets appearing once in every few minutes to a firehourse of tweets coming every second.

Remember there were times when twitter crashed with fail whale appearing from time to time? The community was small but tight knit and with interesting conversations happening all the time.

You can easily jump and join a conversation which can drag on for hours and having a conversation like that was very rewarding. It was the place for geeks and socially awkward people to hang out and just say about anything they wanted without being judged like on Facebook.

I met lot of new friends on Twitter, some of them became my best friends. But as Twitter the inevitable changes happened. The community expanded, different people came along and so did friends.

The conversations turned into a feed of memes and filled with cat gifs, political tweets and rants and things coming from Donald Trump.

Slowly it became a place like Facebook. The conversations became less interesting as more and more conversations started picking up like on Facebook.

When I logged on to Twitter on my mobile it was like this,

My twitter timeline today with tweets arranged algorithmically and tweets from people I don’t follow

There were places on the timeline that showed tweets that were algorithmically arranged and some tweets from people that I don’t follow appearing on my timeline because people I do follow were replying and liking them.

Twitter don’t try to be like Facebook, we already have a thing called Facebook.

I don’t want to see tweets from people that I don’t follow. I don’t want to see what my friends liked and what my friends replied.

Don’t send me notifications from random people that I don’t follow. If I want something I will find it and my friends will share it with me.

Twitter was different and unique that’s why we started using it. If I want something like this I will go back to Facebook because having one Facebook is more than enough.

I know there must me more people out there that might be feeling the same frustration as I do. Who just want a free flow of tweets not arranged algorithmically and deciding what we should see and what we should not see.
