Instagram used to have a reverse chronological feed until Facebook decided to change it in 2016 to an algorithm driven feed just like the NewsFeed.

There are different ideas on how the Instagram feed is showing posts to its users.

In a recent meeting instagram product lead showed how the feed really works and debunked some myths about it.

Instagram users are missing 70 percent of all posts and 50 percent of their friends’ posts before they switched to the new algorithmic feed.

Myths debunked about Instagram feed

  • Instagram has no plan to switch back to the old chronological feed. And why should they because businesswise it’s much easier to make money from an algorithmic feed.
  • Instagram is not hiding any posts, you will see all your friends’ posts if you keep scrolling.
  • You won’t get any advantage if you switched to a business profile. You will get the same priority in the feed as a normal user.
  • There is no shadow banning.
  • How frequently you post has no affect in getting the priority on the Insta feed.
  • Instagram’s feed doesn’t favor users who use Stories, Live, or other special features of the app.
  • Feed ranking does not favor the photo or video format universally but if a user is less engaging with videos it will show less videos.
