Share any file/folder in seconds from your Mac to Windows wirelessly without any third party app

Ensure that your Mac and Windows PC are connected to the same network.

Mac to windows file transfer

In your Macbook:

  1. Go to System preferences → Users & Groups → Click the lock button at the bottom left corner to make changes → (Enter system password to authenticate) → Click ‘+’ symbol above lock icon to add a new user.

2. Enter the following details in the popup that appears:

Select New Account as Sharing Only from the dropdown and fill Full Name, Account name and Password (You will have to remember these to enter in your Windows machine) and click ‘Create User’.

3. Now go to System Preferences → Sharing → Click File sharing checkbox to enable→ Click Options → Enable SMB and AFP checkboxes as shown below → Under windows file sharing , choose the account that we created in step 2 and enter it’s password when prompted → click OK → Click Done

4. Now click the + sign under shared folders to add folders to be shared → Select Add. Now select the chosen folder and click + symbol under Users to add the account that we created in step 2 → Click Select.

5. Choose read & write for the user that you added to enable file sharing to windows.

6. Note down the address that appears under File Sharing : On in the same sharing pane. It will look something like 192.168.23.104.

In windows machine:

  1. Open Run (go to start and choose Run or type ‘run’ in cortana search bar and hit Enter) and enter the address in this format → \\192.168.23.104.
  2. Alternatively you can enter the address in file explorer’s address bar
  3. Enter account name and password when it prompts (User account details that we created in step 2 in Mac) → click Ok
  4. You can now find the folders that we shared from Mac in windows machine. You can now access the folders to read or copy/paste to your windows machine.
