Elon Musk and SpaceX are finishing testing a new satellite system for providing high-speed Internet access Starlink. By the end of December, the company plans to provide the service on a commercial basis to residents of the northern states of the United States and all provinces of Canada, and next year Starlink coverage will become global, which means that fast and inexpensive Internet will appear in all corners of the globe, including the most inaccessible oil and gas fields.

The development of the project Starlink began only 5 years ago, and during that time has done a huge way from idea to launching into earth orbit a few hundred satellites to provide high-speed and inexpensive Internet access anywhere in the world. For remote and hard-to-reach areas that do not have a land-based broadband Internet infrastructure, this will be a real breakthrough, both in the quality of communication and in its cost.

Due to the use of lower orbits (about 500 kilometers above the Earth’s surface), Starlink satellites provide data transmission with a delay of only 3–3.5 milliseconds compared to 500–700 ms for previous generation satellites, due to the length of their geostationary orbit (about 35,000 km). The size of the Starlink satellite constellation (about 1,000 items at present and 12,000 by the end of the first phase of the project) will allow in the future to provide up to 50 percent of all global Internet traffic, which is not comparable to the technical characteristics of satellites in geostationary orbit.

Already in 2021, Starlink plans to achieve global coverage, which will be a revolution in the telecommunications sector. If earlier 1 MB of satellite Internet cost about $ 5, then the monthly access to high-speed Internet Starlink plan to estimate at 75–90 dollars.

With regard to oil and gas production, this technology will quickly and cost-effectively provide a stable connection to the most remote fields and establish uninterrupted data transmission (including well debit), automate the operation of metering units, as well as improve the quality of life of employees, eliminating their feelings of isolation from the outside world.
