Telling Our Story :: Welcome to TECH Port Harcourt (from Oil City to Tech City).
Welcome to Port-Harcourt, popularly referred to as the oil city of Nigeria because of her rich oil and gas deposits. This has put her among the top business destinations in Africa and consequently one of the best investment ports. This is not to say that we are without some peculiar challenges like every city. Nigerians in general are a people who ingeniously turn challenges to their advantage and the Port Harcourt environment and people are a portrayal of that same identity. The same which is gradually earning her global recognition.
In recent times Nigerians have begun to see, embrace and advance in technology which has drawn world attention. An example of such attention is Mark Zuckerberg’s visit to Yaba (Lagos, Nigeria) in August/September last year to places like Andela (who raised fund from the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative), Cc-hub etc.
To this end, Nigeria has been able to produce top-notch tech talents like Prosper Otemuyiwa, cO, Arerosuoghene Wisdom (I call them Baba) etc and growing tech businesses.
What then is the deal with Port Harcourt?
Port Harcourt has witnessed a rise in tech interest as activities of individuals and organisations have given rise to coining a new slogan —
Tech is the new oil.
Startup Sunday, a monthly meetup of startups and entrepreneurs in the city held her anniversary colloquium on Saturday, July 12, 2017 with the theme: “From Oil to Tech — The Impact on the Community”.
Several organisations have also sprung up flying the tech banner. We have the likes of the Google Developer Group, Port Harcourt, Rudigo Academy, Olotu Square, Ken-Saro Wiwa Innovation Hub and many more.
We’ve had tech events and training of high impact like the Google Developers Festival, Andela Android Learning Community training and more.
What do we hope to achieve with techphc?
Tech City Port Harcourt will expose to the world all the activities going on in the tech world South of the Niger, celebrate and advertise her talents and show you why Port Harcourt is one of the best places to find tech talents and launch tech startups.
Our mission is to discover, nurture, empower and build talents and innovative tech businesses by engaging stakeholders, holding effective events, and publicising the Port Harcourt tech eco-system nationally and globally.
