Welcome to the 87th part of the 100-part series on Blockchain.

The concept of the metaverse also has the potential to significantly impact the healthcare industry. Here are some potential applications of the metaverse in healthcare:

(i) Teleconsultation: While telemedicine has already seen adoption during the COVID-19 pandemic, its features and user experience can be further enhanced by the metaverse. It would allow patients to visit a virtual office and meet the physician at a 3D location, making the consultation more immersive, informative, and smarter than consulting through other virtual environments like websites, messaging applications, or social media.

(ii) Education and training: Metaverse can remove the limitation of physical barriers and ensure medical trainees/students receive education and training, even in the most remote places from skilled doctors. Furthermore, VR can help upskill healthcare workers in treatments by creating a simulated real-life environment without risking patients’ life. They will be able to examine the human body in precise anatomical detail in 3D rather than 2D images. Metaverse provides a more immersive experience by allowing the digital avatars of healthcare workers to interact with their colleagues and trainers.

The avatars of physicians and surgeons worldwide can also meet in the metaverse and discuss complex surgeries. Such types of interactions are more immersive than discussing on the phone or via video calls.

(iii) Mental health: The global pandemic led to a rise in conditions such as depression, anxiety, and addictive behaviors due to forced isolation. The metaverse can be effective in counseling patients suffering from these conditions and encouraging follow-ups.
