Today’s small enterprises are tomorrow’s big businesses. One of the most significant factors in pushing the business a level up is choosing a quality technology partner to whom the IT functions of the enterprise can be outsourced. Indian SMEs are experiencing simultaneous adoption of Mobile as well as Cloud based technologies. SMEs don’t see the Cloud Technology as a means of quick wins or cutting costs, but as an instrument for sustainable improvements in the IT landscape for supporting their business.

The trend of cloud computing is evident worldwide. 78% of US SME business will have completely adopted to cloud computing by 2020 doubling the current 37%. 65% are performing back office work, including bookkeeping and accounting with cloud based apps.

Many studies reveal that over three-fourth of the SMEs globally use cloud computing for the purposes like web hosting, E-mail hosting, Data backup and recovery, Content filtering, Application hosting, Data storage, etc. In India, the total addressable market for cloud is estimated at around $406 million and is expected to grow to $88 billion by the end of 2017 which will give India a pretty good edge to compete with the global IT market. Below are the reasons why SMEs need to adopt the Cloud Platform.

Save Cost

Cloud service providers allow organizations to adopt a “pay as u go” or OPEX (operational expenditure) model, which allows companies to engage resources and expertise in cloud hosting where they pay for what they use. Subscription based pricing makes SMEs’ budgeting predictable and manageable. SMEs can save 70% of IT costs by migrating to cloud. With internet bandwidth becoming more affordable, the investment on cloud technology can be pocket-friendly. Cloud increases business savings and so cloud enabled businesses are long term.

Out of the box security and reliability

The cloud users have the options to use public or private cloud (as private cloud provides the user with greater control over the cloud infrastructure) according to their requirement and security constraint. Cloud provides an opportunity to eliminate the premise servers maintained individually by the enterprises. The SMEs need not track the upgradation of the server software as the cloud itself is reliable to maintain the latest software always.

The highly automated services provided by the cloud takes all the responsibility of all the updates of software. The cloud is embraced with stretchable resources like Elastic storage, Elastic bandwidth and Elastic computing. Thus the cloud is enhanced with its government grade security and sophisticated levels of security protocol, which ensure smooth business flow and data protection.

Remote availability

Everyone in the cloud environment has access to one’s data anytime and anywhere as the data always is available on the cloud. This portability and flexibility of the cloud environment helps the user to reduce time consumption and lessen the efforts to be exercised on devising business strategies. The efficient disaster management and data recovery mechanisms in the cloud makes it more reliable with regard to data retainment. The cloud server also tends to increase the scope of mobility since the physical location of server is not to be bothered by the service receiver.

To conclude, 2017 has been and is going to be a year of progressive changes in the SME sectors based on the above mentioned reasons. Cloud adoption not only brings down the total cost of ownership, lowers risk and promotes innovation, but also offers a protected IT set up with high business continuity and IT talent retention which is more crucial for SMEs today. The core business function has a risk free precious resource due to the availability of ready to use secure building blocks. Several policy interventions along with technology and innovation will continue to play a major role in creating a suitable business environment for the SMEs.
