So you took some time out to paint an art and posted it online, only later to find your art being used for training Generative AI arts by some “tech bro”, making them millionaire in the process, while you continue to earn pennies for your work.

A lot of datasets used for AI training have been made without the consent or knowledge of the artists, ignoring the licensing of the work as well.

This is exactly the kind of situation that no artist would want to be in. Glaze a tool developed by researchers at the University of Chicago aims to fight this very thing.

How does it works?

Glaze protects artists against AI copying their style. Analyzing how AI learns from human art, Glaze subtly adjusts the artwork at pixel level in a way that’s imperceptible to humans but confuses AI. It introduces an invisible element that puzzles AI making it challenging for them to grasp. Attempts to tamper with Glaze, like cropping or altering the image, prove futile, as it operates like a constantly changing hidden puzzle piece, preventing AI’s attempts to replicate the artist’s style.

Does it slow down AI development?

A lot of researchers and founders have argued that such tools only slow down the progress in the field of AI, emphasizing the parallels to human learning through mimicry.

However, some artists do explicitly outline the licensing and usage guidelines for their work. Even with stock photos purchasing a license is often mandatory for commercial use. This is underline the importance of respecting and adhering to the terms set by creators, emphasizing the legal and ethical considerations associated with the use of artistic content.

A lot of artists find themselves underpaid and under valued, while the tech founders and investors keep making millions from a derivative works of artists. We hope artists and founders can come together and help each other in a manner that benefits both.
