Spurred by the tragic death of George Floyd, many people across the US have been relentlessly protesting for police reform. As a result of these events, a two year old iPhone shortcut has been recently gaining popularity.

Created by Robert Petersen in 2018, “Hey Siri, I’m getting pulled over,” (previously known as “Police”) is a shortcut for iPhones. The shortcut helps you record any encounters with the police using the “Hey Siri, I’m getting pulled over” command. It will turn down the brightness, pause any music that’s playing, turn on “Do Not Disturb” to block incoming calls, and will start recording video through your front facing camera. It will also alert an emergency contact who is picked during the setup of the shortcut and send them your location. Once you stop recording, it will send the video to the emergency contact and also gives you the option to save the file to your iCloud or Dropbox.

How to set up

Step 1: Install the Shortcuts app from the App Store.

Step 2: Enable “Allow Untrusted Sources” in Settings.

Step 3: Open this link in Safari on your iPhone.

Follow the onscreen instructions for setup and you should be good to go!

Obviously, the shortcut by itself won’t be able to stop police misconduct and racial discrimination, but it definitely will be able to name and identify those who are involved in such acts. Currently, there isn’t any pre-made shortcut for Android, but there is a way for you to create it yourself, using a few simple steps, but that’s a topic for another day. If you ever find yourself in a dilemma with the police and you suspect that it is for a discriminatory reason, use this feature and hopefully, bad police officers are exposed.
