Microsoft and Kano have teamed up to create a new, second-generation Kano PC that will teach people the basics of building a computer.

In partnership with Microsoft, Kano is releasing the next generation of their easy-to-build Windows 10 computer lineup, and these new computers pack some sweet upgrades while keeping the same $299 price. The new version includes updated internals and a slightly new design.

What is the Kano PC?

The Kano PC is an affordable modular, build-it-yourself Windows 10 computer. It’s designed to teach beginners the basics of computing and STEM. Since it’s modular, a lot of the parts are replaceable. Kano’s primary consumer is not parents, but rather schools in need of affordable IT equipment.

Specifications

  • Intel Celeron N4000 (Dual-Core)
  • 4GB DDR3L RAM
  • 64GB eMMC storage
  • 11.6" HD touchscreen (1366 x 768 resolution)
  • At least 10 hours of battery life
  • USB-C for charging

The new machine will be powered by the Intel Celeron N4000, a dual-core entry-level processor. The 6-watt N4000 is quite a substantial leap in performance compared to the processor used in last year’s model, the old and sluggish 2-watt Intel Atom x5-Z8350. Although the N4000 isn’t the most powerful chip, it’s still powerful enough for simple tasks. The company claims the Kano PC will offer on-par performance with other entry-level computers from popular brands such as HP or Acer.

The Kano PC boasts a minimum of 10 hours of battery life and will be charged via USB-C. The device also offers a sufficient selection of ports, with one USB-C, two 3.0 USB-A ports, a micro-SD slot, and a headphone jack. They’ve added a bigger heatsink to increase performance and cooling and have also upgraded Bluetooth from 4.2 to 5.0. Instead of running Windows 10 in S mode, the new Kano PC will now run Windows 10 Home, a more capable version of the Windows 10 operating system.

Some things aren’t changing, and like the previous model, the new model will still feature the same 4GB RAM and 64GB eMMC storage. The storage can be upgraded via a micro-SD card. It will also be the same 11.6" HD (1366 x 768 resolution) touchscreen panel. The keyboard also acts as a protective case when closed.

Kano is also launching a lineup of peripherals, including headphones, mice, and webcams to complement the Kano PC.

Price

The Kano PC will retail for $299, a price rather low for kid-friendly laptops like this one. This is a great value for parents and especially schools wanting to buy them in bulk.

Software

As I mentioned before, the Kano PC will run Windows 10 Home. Kano’s original computers were based on the Raspberry Pi 3 running Kano’s custom Linux distribution. The new Windows 10 models reduce some of the unique qualities in assembling the computer but in exchange provide a more usable and faster experience. Kano will continue to offer its own apps and subscriptions on learning how to code and STEM topics. Memberships like Kano Club provide guided video tutorials, access to Artopia, and Kano beta apps.

Conclusion

The Kano PC is a great product for children to delve into the world of innovation. The affordable price point and decent specs make it a great buy for both parents as well as schools. The Kano PC is a great and creative concept and I’m sure it will be loved by children who are interested in STEM.
