After a picture of an unreleased smart home device was leaked, Google confirmed its next Nest device. Here is what we know so far.

Recently, the above picture of Google’s next smart home device was leaked online. Rumored to be the successor of the Google Home, Google’s first smart device, this new device will be larger and will have an updated design and features. Here is what we know so far about Google’s next Nest device.

Design

Google’s next smart home device is expected to be much larger than the original Google Home. According to a photo of the device next to a ruler (shown below), it will be 220 mm long, which is 77 mm longer than the Google Home and even 20 mm longer than the Google Home Max, and 150 mm wide. The device will be wrapped in fabric, will have a silicon base like the other Google smart home devices, and can be positioned vertically and horizontally. The expected color choices are white, charcoal, aqua blue, and coral. Some things that will stay the same are the Google logo in the middle of the silicon base on the back and the mute switch. Unfortunately, there is no evidence that this new Nest device will have an auxiliary input port or a USB-C port.

Power and Battery

This new device is rumored to have a 30W power supply that plugs into the smart home device. Also, notice how I said “Battery” in the header. That is because in the teaser trailer for this device, a girl was shown running with it in her hands. Hopefully, this suggests that this new Nest device will run on battery power and can be used on the go. The capacity of this battery is still unknown, however.

What Else is New?

This new device will be equipped with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capabilities just like other Nest devices. One new feature is the design, which I talked about earlier, and according to Digital Trends, this new design suggests improved sound quality and could house dual stereo speakers. Other than this, not much is new on Google’s next smart home device. It is essentially a complete redesign of the Google Home with all of the new features added to Google Home and Google Nest devices since its release.

Price and Release Date

This new Nest device is expected to be priced somewhere near the original $99 retail price of the Google Home when it was launched four years ago. It may be a little more expensive because of all of the new features and its bigger size, but it should not stray too far from the Google Home’s price at release.

Because Google has already given us tech enthusiasts and Google fans an official picture and a teaser trailer, we can assume that more details will be coming soon. The device was most likely originally supposed to be released at Google I/O but because it was canceled, CNET predicts that it will be officially announced in the fall, and if this is true, get ready to purchase it on sale on Black Friday! This device will provide a reasonably priced entry into the world of smart technology and I am sure it will be extremely popular like the original Google Home.
