This, he said, is in furtherance of the company’s principle of security and to ensure it is at the cutting edge of technology and protocols needed to secure the data of individuals and organizations.

“Data needs to be secure for people to trust it so we continue to invest over a billion dollars a year to upgrade our security to get in advance of people trying to use technology for nefarious means,” he explained.

Speaking at the second data protection conference in Accra, Appiah said Microsoft processes data to empower individuals and organizations for economic growth. This is achieved through the creation of computing power to wherever people want it at any point in time. He said this is helping what people believe is the “fourth industrial revolution” which is dependent on factors as the presence of hyper scale data centers, mobile and internet availability and availability of data.

Appiah however believes that for technology to play the role effectively in the future, trust is imperative saying, “this is where a data protection regime comes in handy because we believe that the technology has to be trusted for people to use it”.

He said the company holds privacy as part of the four principles in their refusal to adhere to requests by the US government for the data of individuals and organizations the company hosts. The country manager reiterated their compliance to the rules and regulations of all jurisdictions they operate in while ensuring transparency by publishing what data they have and the use it is put to for the information of data on subjects.

He asserted that the existence of a data protection regime facilitates business, engenders trust in the investor community and thus helps to attract investment of the right source to the country.

Appiah assured of his organization’s continued support to ensure the protection of data for national development.
