How to Highlight Your Hackathon Experience on LinkedIn
If you’re reading this post, you’ve either participated in or competed in a hackathon. Whether you created a project or just attended workshops, below are tips on how to effectively showcase your hackathon experience.
If you won a prize…
1. List the prize in the awards section of your LinkedIn profile.
Make sure to add the year the hackathon took place, a concise description of your hack, and what prize you won.
Add in how many people you were competing against if the hackathon had over 200+ competitors. This adds to the “wow-factor” of your achievement.
If you worked with other people, it can’t hurt to include their names to show recruiters that you are a team player.
If you built a project…
1. Ask your teammates to endorse you for programming and leadership skills.
These people just spent the entire working with you, so they should have a good idea of your skill-sets. Once you get enough endorsements, your profile will start to stand out to recruiters.
2. Post about your project and tag your teammates.
This helps raise the visibility of your LinkedIn profile and enables you to build your personal brand. Below is an example of a great post.
If you are connected with one of the organizers, tag them! It is likely they will re-share the post because it’s in their best interest to showcase your success.
If you didn’t build a project but attended workshops…
1. Post about what you learned and tag the workshop leads.
If you attended an Introduction to Github workshop, then write a post about what you learned and thank the workshop lead. If you want to make the post interactive, ask your audience a question about what you should learn next. Below is an example.
Tagging people or organizations in these posts will help you get more eyeballs on your post and as a result, you will get more likes and shares.
Once you’ve done all these things, don’t forget to add all the workshop leads, teammates, judges, and mentors on LinkedIn! You will thank me later when you’re looking for internships and jobs.
