TechTogether to Act as Event Partner for Record-Breaking Climate Change Hackathon

AUSTIN, TX (August 27, 2019) — TechTogether has partnered with Experimental Civics and The Earth Hacks Foundation to organize Capsule 2020, a hackathon staged to bring together over 4,000 participants from around the world for two days of collaboration and innovation in mitigating the effects of climate change. Notable event features include presentations at Oxford University and the United Nations showcasing Capsule as a critical solution-focused event. The hackathon will take place at Travis County Exposition Center in Austin, Texas on June 20 — June 21, 2020. Registration will open on January 27, 2020.

Capsule 2020 is aimed to connect technologists with environmental experts to produce solutions that will address the world climate crisis. As a key event partner, TechTogether is set to design the Challenge Partnership Program and support in organizing six challenge areas, in which participants are expected to create over 500 projects. Hackathon participants will mainly consist of seasoned industry specialists, college and graduate students, and young professionals. The symposium is aimed to break the Guinness World Record for Most Participants at a Hackathon.

Thousands of bright minds from interdisciplinary fields of technology, environmental law, climate science, government, artists and more will gather to discuss the impending reverberations of climate change and to generate practical solutions to help save the planet. Projects will be created to explore challenge areas such as energy, health, food, cities, art, and education. Themes will include the Ocean Biome, Desert Biome, and Rainforest Biome.

Sarah Sharif, Founder of Capsule and Experimental Civics, says of the event, “Our planet is standing on the precipice of irreversible damage. We can no longer wait. Hackathons hold tremendous value by bringing people together in an innovative format. We can raise awareness, elevate new ideas, and energize solutions.”

TechTogether is committed to harnessing the power of hackathons to promote change. The nonprofit organization serves this partnership with a foundation of community and logistical expertise in organizing hackathons. Eva Lynch, Capsule 2020 Director of Challenges and TechTogether’s representative in the partnership, has stated, “Capsule is monumental because it’s designed to support projects beyond the event since lasting solutions take time to achieve and require a devoted, diverse network of people. Our mission to maintain progress in the fight for change is realized through active partnerships and intentional investment with underrepresented groups that are often excluded from this effort. The climate crisis is an Everyone crisis.”

The mission of TechTogether is to optimize innovation through inclusion. A proponent of diversity in STEM, TechTogether will serve its community at Capsule 2020 by supporting the representation of marginalized groups at the hackathon. It is of the utmost importance to TechTogether that underrepresented voices are captured in this groundbreaking work.
