An atlas of civic engagement guides a TEDx event to new ideas
Vivero de Iniciativas Ciudadanas (Nursery of Citizen Initiatives) maps citizen action. Based in Madrid, the collective is dedicated to tracking all that “builds a more inclusive, ethical, sustainable, participative and livable city.”
When seeking out ideas to share at their recent event in Madrid, the team at TEDxMadrid turned to Los Madriles, the organization’s civic initiatives map in Madrid.
Seven of the citizens behind these initiatives — seven dots on the Los Madriles map — were invited to give talks at the event, so that “the ideas we see on stage are localized,” says organizer Antonella Broglia. “People can visit and speak with their creators, innovators in housing, sports, theater, inclusion, waste management. [Their ideas] can spread and make Madrid a better city.”
Each attendee of the salon was given a copy of the map and invited to investigate all of the initiatives making waves in their city.
Five hundred attendees gathered in the public square of Orcasitas to watch talks from these citizen superstars during “a night that will be unforgettable for all of us,” says Brogila.
