University life is known to be a struggle at times. As you try to balance academics, social life and projects together, you can sometimes end up feeling overwhelmed.

Here’s a couple of tips we’ve put together and drawn from our experience as freshman students to help you avoid this feeling:

1. Be organised

Know what you have to do and when you plan to do it. Don’t loose time being unorganised. This tip only will save you hours of stressing out.

How will this help ?

Because you won’t loose time looking for things you lost and won’t have the added stress of searching for them.

You will also be able to break up big assignments into smaller tasks. Once you do this, projects will become easier to manage and fit into your schedule. It will allow you to free up time.

2. Focus

Know where you’re going. Know how to get there. Set goals for yourself and work on them. Although this might seem obvious and you’ve probably heard it a hundred times already, it really does help to free up time.

How will this help ?

Because once you set a clear direction for yourself, you cut the time you loose deciding over what to do and considering alternatives. This ultimately makes you gain time and be less anxious.

3. “Just one thing”

When you’re working, you should try and stick to doing one thing, at one time. More than that and you loose efficiency.

How will this help ?

Because if you don’t multitask, you finish your tasks quicker. And when you finish your tasks quicker, you gain more time in the long run and are less stressed out by procrastination.

4. Sleep well

To be more efficient at what you’re doing, sleep better.

How will this help ?

Because sleeping better will give you more energy. And energy is the key to focus. And as we saw already, focus is key to getting more free time. More sleep is also good all-around: it improves your mood, your immune system and your memory. Three things that are essential to your success.

5. Exercise

On the same line as the previous tip, to be more efficient, exercise.

How will this help ?

Again, exercising raises your energy levels. The more energy you have, the more you can do and the faster you can do it. Also, exercising makes you sleep better. It’s really the key to success.

6. Stay social

When we mention getting more done, we don’t imply you should become a workaholic. We are advising you to do the opposite. Keeping in touch with friends, going out and having good times will help you work.

How will this help ?

We’re going to keep using the same logic here. Being happy with your social life is key to being happy with your life. And it’s no secret being happy gives you more energy. And what does energy give you ? We think you already know the answer.

Plus, friends can help you get through tough times, which is important to your success.

7. Get help if you need it

Although all the tips tell you what to do, they don’t tell you what to do if things go bad. What if you’re taking a very hard class ? Or you’re going through a tough time in life ? You will need help to make it through.

How will this help ?

Relying on your friends to let your emotions out will make you calmer, which will improve your focus and help you achieve tip#3. Talk to your parents about your problems if you need to: it is likely they have experienced the same or been through worse. Your university might even have a counselling service set up to help you if you’re going through some dark times.

In academics, give our platform a look. We have plenty of students waiting to help you.
