Wanna know what advice one of our Teechers has to give on Uni Dorming for your first year? Read the next 5 pro tips
1.Don’t be that guy/girl
I know that seems vague, but trust me, it can be applied to so many situations when you first start dorming with people in university. If you’re gonna leave a mess in a common area, don’t be that guy. If you’re gonna finish someone else’s Doritoes, don’t be that girl! Basically, just don’t do what you wouldn’t want your roommates to do to you. If you live by that rule, you guys are gonna have the best time.
2. Spend some time with your roommates
You live with them, so you might as well befriend them. Plus, it’s super easy as in most UK uni flat shares, you get a bunch of rooms aligned in a corridor and a tiny common area. So don’t spend all your time in your 5 by 4 room, go out there and eat with your roommates, work together or chill as a group! You’ll see, it makes everything better when you have roommates you get along with.
3. Contribute
There’s always that one mate who’s too nice for his own good. He’ll never ask you to buy the TP for the communal bathroom and will take it on as his duty. Nevertheless, once in a while, put in some of your time and efforts. Beat him to it, buy him a snack, thank him and simply show him/ her that you appreciate what they’re doing and that they don’t HAVE to. You’d be glad to split things.
4. Don’t just sleep and go to class
I get it, first year can be stressful. It’s very tempting to spend half your day in class and the other half in bed watching Youtube videos. However, that’s not a way to live your life. Go out there! Socialise! You may not believe me now, but trust me, time will fly by and you’ll find yourself missing those moment of camaraderie. So next time you feel like dosing off after a long day of War Studies, ask one of your roommates if they wanna grab a coffee instead!
5. Enjoy
After reading a lot of articles on the Teech blog, I’ve seen that most of the tip sections end with “Enjoy”, and that’s fair enough because as simplistic as it seems, if you don’t enjoy yourself, you won’t want to work hard, and you’ll miss out on so many other things you can take back with you from your university experience. So please, trust me, ENJOY YOURSELF!
