Great games made with RPG Maker

RPG Maker is an amazing game engine for those who are just starting out or solo developers. It is incredibly simple to learn even without a coding background, has a huge support community, and tons of assets that you can use/purchase online. While a RPG is the most obvious choice to make with RPG maker, you can really make all kinds of games just being a bit creative with the mechanics available.

Despite it’s simplicity, some incredible, customized and high quality games have been made with RPG Maker. Here’s a look at some of them that I have personally played.

  1. Omori

This game has a decent amount of controversy involved in it’s development, but despite it all, this is a pretty impressive accomplishment for RPG Maker. For one thing, it is way longer than most games created in the engine (over 40 hours for people who want to 100%). The maps are huge and full of charming design and even the combat system takes a creative spin on the default game system.

2. To The Moon

To The Moon is incredibly charming. The story is heart wrenching and perfectly condensed into around 6 hours of gameplay. It’s one of those games I recommend going in with no previous knowledge and complete it all in one night to feel the full impact of the story. The game is almost completely story driven, which is a step away from the RPG type games the engine is known for.

3. Corpse Party

If you watched Youtubers play video games in the 2010s, you probably are at least familiar with the title of this game. It’s a genuinely fun and spooky horror game. It doesn’t have crazy special effects or insane art, but it does an amazing job at setting the mood.

4. Mad Father

This game is similar to Corpse Party and came out a few years later. It’s a great horror game that, like Corpse Party, creates an unnerving mood without the use of a ton of special effects. Unlike Corpse Party, it has a more Victorian horror setting.

5. The Endless Empathy

The game is the perfect example of what RPG Maker can really do if you put the time and love into it. Most RPG Maker games have a similar art style, but this game is a complete deviation from the usual RPG. Its a bizarre experience about life and death with crazy visuals.
