Gamestop Pro Problems!
Rough times continue for Gamestop. After announcing a roughly 600 million dollar loss last year, the company is focusing on trying to regain that revenue by other means, at the customer’s expense.
In an announcement this week, Gamestop is planning on raising the cost of its pro membership from $15.99 to $19.99, which is definitely going to be unwelcome by its customer base. This also comes with the announcement of the discontinuation of the 10% discount to used games. Gamestop is instead, opting to give customers a $5 reward coupon every month. This definitely does not seem to give gamers their money’s worth. This is a $40 savings, but would mean shoppers would have to shop their more than once a month to take full advantage of the program. Additionally, this leaves out individuals who would save more through the discount program.
With the life of physical gaming coming to a close, this makes sense from a business standpoint for Gamestop to stay alive. With the announcement of the Google Stadia as well as collaborative efforts in cloud gaming through Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony, this may be one of the final nails in the coffin that is Gamestop.
The start of the new program does not yet have an official release date.
