The Teleportal team is very excited to release Vortex 1.0 on Android and iOS (via TestFlight) today. Vortex is a performance-based 3D animation toolkit for mobile video creators. Our ambition for bringing creators together through Vortex is huge and we’re excited to help make CGI something any creator can use to explore creative ideas.

Early Vortexplorations!

The Teleportal team came together building creative tools with spatial interfaces at hackathons. Armature (2018) is an AR app for Mira Prism that gives stop-motion animators a properly scaled, 3D onion skin to guide their poses each frame. In 2019, we began prototyping Vortex with the real-time technology we built to power WiTag. Initially a collaborative virtual camera system, Vortex became an exploration into how the powerful spatial computers in our pockets can make 3D Animation/VFX more improvisational and expressive.

Testing Armature at the Mira HQ DTLA in 2018.

In Vortex, you create and share 3D animated videos by composing a set of performances on characters, cameras or props in space and time. In addition to performing object motion via touch-screen input, Vortex allows you to use your mobile device’s AR tracking to animate.

Vortex fundamentals: inhabit, perform, capture and export!

Vortex is inspired by Mandalorian-style virtual production, Figma, multitrack recorders and music/video editors such as Abelton and iMovie that paved the way for accessible temporal media production. Whether you’re a seasoned CG professional or a first time 3D creator, we are eager to learn from your experience in Vortex. While we have been building towards today for years, we recognize that these are the early days for our product. Vortex will be improving rapidly in the coming months and we would be very grateful for your feedback.

Lastly, thank you to the people who have given us the ability to realize the products we have been dreaming up for years. We treat the opportunity to build pivotal technologies for the future with great responsibility and it simply would not be possible without the overwhelming support of our families, teammates, friends, advisors and investors.
