Chemistry can be a subject that requires a lot of memorisation and most importantly, conceptual understanding. These following tips are some elements that you can incorporate into your studies to achieve greater comprehension!
- Make your own notes (mind maps, flowcharts etc.) — don’t focus on pure aesthetics but make sure that what you’re writing contains a certain element of sequence and logical flow to help you understand the concepts better
- Identify the common equations that need to be memorised (e.g. combustion of hydrocarbons CxHy + (x + y/4) O2 -> xCO2 + y/2 H2O) and commit them to memory
- Practice, practice, practice!
- Content like mole calculations and qualitative analysis (QA) may seem straightforward in nature, but chemistry is all about application. After completing your notes for a topic, test your true understanding of the content by attempting different questions. Identify the question types you are weaker at or areas you are less familiar with and work on them!
