English as a subject can be extremely frustrating to study as there is a lack of fixed syllabus, compared to the rest of our subjects. However, there are still multiple ways that we can improve our English skills and thereafter score better for exams!

  • Make a word bank to contain all the vocabulary, making sure to update them consistently. This is useful for both paper 1 (Language use) and paper 2 (Comprehension paraphrase) as the increase in vocabulary that you have, less time will be spent on thinking about what words to write.
  • You can look through previous practice papers to find out which words you struggled with paraphrasing and then can organise in any form that is easy to see (table etc.)
  • For example:
  • For comprehension questions, you must be able to identify question types for Comprehension (eg. Direct; Direct + Paraphrase; Inference etc), then format answers in a way that answers the question
  • For example :
  • The list for question types is non-exhaustive, so it is good to write down the question type at the side of the questions before answering them to get an idea of the requirements of the question.
