We’ve all been there stupid o’clock in the morning at the bus stop willing the coffee we just bought to warm us up and not freeze solid in the takeaway cup. It’s the great British weather game we play every day, you know, the cruel wheel of fate that decides it’ll snow in April. We were dreaming of a white Christmas and instead get a slushy Easter. But on this day we looked outside and thought great the sun is shining finally I’ll make an effort with my appearance today, still going for the winter coat because we’re not lunatics but we refuse to button it up.

We open the front to what we think is glorious sunshine the start of spring with flowers and rainbows, you can feel the cold laughing as it slaps us in the face it may as well be the arctic out there. Never before has that coat been buttoned quite so quickly but it’s too late the cold is in our bones.

We seem to think walking quickly will solve the issue get the blood pumping, however, the numbness of our face by the time we make it to the coffee shop disproves this theory. And those blissful warm two minutes in the coffee shop will only make it worse but we don’t care it’s warm in here and holding a hot coffee cup will help. Indeed, by making one hand overly sweaty as you power walk to the bus stop trying to keep it steady, the other hand clenched deep in a pocket.

And if you’re anything like me nicotine will be required but as soon as I start the rolling process the wind picks up, someone is spinning that weather wheel again, wind from one direction and drizzle from the other. The weather will not defeat me, my crooked sad looking cigarette made now to coax the lighter to defy the wind. Though really it doesn’t matter if I’m successful or not because no sooner have I lit it and taken my first drag than the bus pulls in.
