Making a Difference

Have you ever heard of a parasitic flea (the chigoe flea) that burrows into the skin and can cause serious anemia and disfigurement, often times resulting in the loss of toes and fingers? No? I hadn’t, either, until I recently came across a video showing a rather disturbing image.

A small child — younger than any of mine — sat before a woman with a surgical blade. His feet were a mass of scarring and bumps. The woman began to cut away necrotic tissue, revealing the life-sucking parasites under the surface. This tiny boy puts on a brave face, but you can see the tears threatening to spill over. Apparently, this is common in many people of all ages in sub-Saharan Africa. Many are so debilitated by this insect infestation that they cannot work or care for their families, much less themselves.

Enter the Rise Up Society (RUS), headed by Jim Nduruchi. He tirelessly campaigns and travels to these remote areas to help the underserved communities. They’ve made it their mission to reach out to these people in rural Kenya and help them achieve freedom from these parasites so they can live more fulfilling and productive lives. It started as a grassroots effort, and on many levels still is. They depend wholly on donations of money and supplies to continue their outreach programs. They’re even building a specialized medical clinic and senior home! If you have a chance, check out this little organization with a huge heart.
