Organised Chaos

House sitting a two room flat for a week can’t be that stress-oh Jesus. Well, at least I can see the bed not the floor but the bed. The patch of carpet by the door is clean though and as I look around I begin to wonder if the lack of storage justifies the mess. They’ve lived here almost a year but there are still boxes behind the door, next to it an ancient chest of drawers acts as a Picasso of a dressing table. They do say creatives are messy.

As I scan the room I don’t fail to miss the personal touches; the stuffed animals on a high shelf, the future DIY project not yet started and so had become a bedside table. Yes, this sums up my friends perfectly. A clean colourful bedspread and plains curtains just too short for the window. The temporary wardrobes; hers complete but failing under the weight of too many clothes and shoes, his only half built and no longer functional as storage boxes slowly take its place. A couple doing their best with whats been given.

I glance at the floor, she never changes, clean clothes piles of them yet the dilapidated wardrobe looks full. Pairs of shoes recently worn scattered, charger cables hurriedly used and discarded handbags. The same can be said of his side; work boots thoroughly worn, flat caps galore and piles of t-shirts waiting for place to live with not enough time in the day to find one. Each side feeling the others bad habits, both hating and loving each other for it.

I laugh despite the fact I couldn’t live like this if I close my eyes I can see them. She knows where everything on her side is, its organised chaos that only she can see through. He wants to know where everything is but blindly makes his mess with the intention of clearing it up. I sigh and smile moving her piles of clean clothes into the corner by the collapsing wardrobe and sit. At least they made the bed for me.

This was a writing challenge to describe my bedroom from the perspective of someone else occupying it. I imagine the details described will come as no surprise to those who know me.
