Another contest in the books! And another very difficult job for yours truly — identifying the finalists and winners from hundreds of submissions.

I’m proud to be including ALL of these pieces in Tell Your Story, and very proud to be featuring all of them in the upcoming print edition.

Without further preamble, here they are!

1st Place Winner

“Miscalculating the Gravity of My Situation” by Phyllis Unterschuetz
A simply wonderful and difficult piece, this is the definition of personal essay. It’s done what great CNF does to me, and has made me think about it a little bit every day ever since I first read it. Truly remarkable.

2nd Place Winner

“Measuring Grief in Cheeseburgers” by Julie Matlin
Another one that has stuck with me ever since I read it. Matlin pulls off a very difficult essay in a very difficult style — second person. Terrific, emotional writing.
