We are the trainees from ISG team!

Hi everyone — happy to have you guys here on our blog! We are the interns from Innovation and Solutions Group (ISG) and are here to share our summer internship experiences.

Hi, my name is Jing and I am a third year studying Computer Science and Economics at Cornell University. Prior to my time here, my perception of Tencent is one of amazement – I am well aware of the company’s rapidly growing multimedia platform and its continual success in the gaming industry – but beyond that I have no knowledge of neither Tencent Thailand’s work culture nor its tech stack. Regardless, I was very excited to learn more about the company myself.

Upon starting my first day at the company, something I noticed right away is how cordial the environment here is. The roon p’s here are all very nice and friendly and I was very much thrown back by the company’s relatively laid-back work culture. Despite being one of Thailand’s top tier tech firm, ego is nothing but non-existent and teamwork really is the name of the game here.

From what I wrote earlier, it may seem as if the work here is not so serious but this is not the case – although work culture is quite laid-back, the actual work here rather intense. On my first day here, I was assigned tasks with deadlines – a lot of which I did not initially know how to do. However, because everyone here is always so willing to help, I went from knowing practically nothing to working with reading/writing binary files in the backend and developing an API from these binary data files.

Work aside, the perks here are also amazing!! Free lunch, free snacks, and occasional treat – what else can you ask for!? All in all I had a great time so I’m sure you would too as well! :)

Hi, I’m Suyash Kothari and I’m a rising sophomore at Brown University, where I study Computer Science and Public Policy. I’m really interested in how technology can be used to better address societal issues in an intentional, human-centered way. I’m excited to have joined the Tencent Thailand community this summer, as Tencent has a wide range of tools and applications through which we can explore algorithms to improve tech-human interactions.

I’ve always had the bad habit of misplacing things and being unable to find them in the physical world but virtually, I’m actually quite neat! One of the ways I’ve tried to find things better is experimenting with search engine algorithms, and, at Tencent, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to take what I know many steps further by trying out machine learning to improve search results for JOOX. Studying the improvements made to search engines can not only reveal how we can more easily find information, but can help Tencent satisfy, retain and even increase its JOOX user base. Implementing neural search is an effective way to achieve this.

The core concept of applying neural networks for search engines is to provide an intermediary between the user and the search engine that can contextualize searches, drawing from the user’s background and also analyzing the corpus of data for better clues for what a user might be looking for. Specifically, I used a new Natural Language Processing model called BERT to extract features from song metadata. This involves using a multilingual version of BERT released by Google that has been trained on English and Thai Wikipedia to convert metadata text into numerical vectors of many dimensions that capture a text’s context and meaning. Using this, given a user’s query, the search engine will not only look for results that have the identical string in its title or lyrics, but go further and find songs that have the closest meanings. The desired outcome is that the JOOX search feature’s recall as well as its precision are improved.

I’ve learned so much in my internship at Tencent, and I owe much of my learning to my mentor P’Ouan who has shown me the importance of research and testing, given me machine learning tips and has just generally been a great teacher. I’ve also learned a lot from other interns and colleagues in my own department and in others, all of whom have made my work environment at Tencent welcoming and fun.

What I’ve learned here will continue to be useful beyond my internship. Exploring how search engines are structured and the methods employed within them is important epistemologically, given the modern impulse to use one to search for what we want to know. Search engines are increasingly also political tools, being exploited by malicious organizations to spread misinformation, and the deeper knowledge that Tencent has given me will allow me to better explore ways to strengthen search engines and further pursue my interests of tech policy and Computer Science.

สวัสดีค่ะ ขอแนะนำตัวก่อนนะคะ ชื่อกวาง ตอนนี้เรียน Computer Engineering อยู่ที่สถาบันเทคโนโลยีนานาชาติสิรินธร มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์หรือที่เรียกกันสั้นๆว่า SIIT วันนี้จะมาแชร์ประสบการณ์ ความรู้สึกและสิ่งที่ได้รับจากการฝึกงานที่ Tencent (Thailand) ในช่วงระยะเวลา 2 เดือน

เรามีโอกาศได้เข้ามาฝึกงานในทีม Innovation and Solution Group ที่ Tencent (Thailand) ซึ่งทีมนี้รับผิดชอบงานหลายด้าน เช่น Joox.com, Machine Learning และ Data

ต้องบอกเลยว่าก่อนที่จะเริ่มฝึกงาน เราแอบมีความกังวลนิดหน่อยว่าพี่ๆที่เราต้องเข้าไปร่วมทีมด้วยจะเป็นยังไงและเราจะทำในสิ่งที่พี่ๆเค้ามอบหมายให้เราได้รึป่าว แต่พอได้มาอยู่จริงๆ มันไม่เหมือนที่เรากังวลไว้ก่อนหน้านั้นเลย พี่ๆทุกคนในทีมน่ารักมากๆ คอยสอนและพร้อมที่จะให้ความช่วยเหลือในปัญหาที่เราเจอ ทุกครั้งที่เรามีคำถามหรือสงสัยอะไร พี่ๆเค้าไม่เคยหงุดหงิด แต่จะอธิบายให้ฟังแบบละเอียดและให้ความรู้เพิ่มเติมจากที่เราถาม

ตลอดระยะเวลา 2 เดือนที่ผ่านมา เรามีโอกาสได้เห็นการทำงานจริงๆว่ามันเป็นยังไง ได้เรียนรู้อะไรหลายๆอย่างที่ในห้องเรียนไม่ได้สอน เริ่มรู้สึกเข้าใกล้ชีวิตการทำงาน การฝึกงานครั้งนี้ เราไม่ใช่ได้แค่ความรู้ แต่ยังได้แนวคิดในการทำงานและคำแนะนำอะไรอีกหลายๆอย่างในการที่จะเข้าสู่ชีวิตการทำงานจริงหลังเรียนจบ พี่ๆในทีมจะบอกเสมอเรื่อง Teamwork โดยเฉพาะการทำงานอยู่ในสายนี้ สิ่งที่เราเห็นชัดที่สุดจากพี่ๆทุกคนในทีมนี้คือพี่ๆจะช่วยเหลือกันจนกว่างานชิ้นนั้นเสร็จ

สถานการณ์ Covid19 ทำให้บริษัทมีข้อจำกัดบางอย่าง เราและเพื่อนๆที่ร่วมฝึกงานด้วยกันจึงไม่ค่อยได้ทำความรู้จักกัน แต่พี่ๆทุกคนในทีมเฟรนลี่ คุยเล่น เอ็นดูเราเป็นน้องร่วมทีมด้วย ทำให้เรารู้สึกว่าพี่ๆเค้าเป็นทั้งพี่และเพื่อน เราไม่รู้สึกอึดอัดเวลาอยู่ในทีม อยากบอกว่าประทับใจและขอบคุณพี่ๆทุกคนมากๆค่ะ

สุดท้าย.. อยากจะบอกทุกคนว่า ลองก้าวออกมาจาก Comfort Zone ของตัวเอง แล้วเราจะได้รู้อะไรอีกมากมายที่เราไม่เคยรู้
