Tenrocket started with a compelling message. We’ll build your app for $10k in 10 days. In the complex world of custom software, the simplicity and clarity of this message resonated with founders. “Finally someone who could bring an app to life without costing an absurd amount! And in just 10 days!”

This message was clear on the surface, but it created wildly unrealistic expectations. Many founders expected a fully finished product after those 10 days, regardless of the complexity behind their idea. We had many hard conversations letting people know that their vision cost much more than $10,000. Often times what they wanted would be more than six figures.

In early 2019, we stopped communicating this offer. Our focus shifted to educating founders on the process of building great apps. We created content, hosted meetups, and talked many people out of building an app. After months with this education-first approach, we revisited the idea of $10k in 10 days. We’re excited about where we landed.

Three Paths

The idea is to provide the right deliverables at the right time. We don’t want to bite off too much at once, just what we know will be valuable and we can execute well. We’re offering three distinct paths, each of which provides its own unique value depending on the product idea and stage.

  1. Research and Development—we build the most difficult element first, answering the question “can this be built?”
  2. Visual Prototype—we design the look and functionality of the app, often to help raise funds or get pre-sales. This answers the question, “will anyone buy this?”
  3. Proof-of-Concept—we leverage existing tools to create custom workflows that imitate the final product. This is a cost efficient way to prove your model and answers the question, “how will people use this?”

Even with these changes, the vision remains the same—helping founders launch their product with speed and confidence. With all three of these options, we’re working toward getting a product in the hands of users as quickly as possible so we can learn and iterate. That’s how great apps are built.
