For the last several years the use of AI has significantly increased in the field of dentistry. Right from simple administrative tasks to core dental operations and creating oral health awareness among youth, the AI has vast and varied applications in dentistry. In this blog, we will review some of the different ways in which Machine Learning and other branches of Artificial Intelligence are shaping the future of dentistry:

Automated tooth chart populating

By employing ML’s pattern-recognizing and prediction capabilities the tooth charts can automatically be populated that streamlines the job of dentists and by syncing appointment schedules and facilitating electronic records maintenance.

There are AI-enabled tools that can provide a 360-degree assessment of specific areas that requires treatment. Moreover, the AI-enabled virtual assistants that can lighten the load of dentists and offer them the required assistance during more complicated operations.

Adding a “gadget-appeal” to toothbrush

We all remember how the boring brushing ritual turned into an enjoyable activity, thanks to the toy brushes and vehicle shaped brush holders. Using a similar packaging appeal some companies are turning brushes into chic gadgets to attract more millennials to take proper care of their teeth.

For instance, a company called Quip has brought an electric toothbrush that combines style and intelligence (that is AI). Replacing conventional with convenience the company has wisely designed the brush to provide better cleaning even in the awkward areas of the mouth. Moreover, this smart toothbrush helps Millenials clean their teeth more effectively in less time and with fewer efforts thanks to its automation features.

All these things will encourage Millenials to make good oral care an essential feature of their routine.

Easy support with AI-chatbots

AI-based chatbots help dentists to communicate round the clock with patients- or at least answer their primary queries. It will not only allow the dentists to tend to more patients but also help the patients to get a timely response to their queries until they can physically visit the dentists.

As opposed to general chat that requires an operator to directly interact with another person, the AI chatbot can independently communicate with the patients and help them with the ideal advice on general queries. While AI chatbots may not be able to answer more complicated issues, they can be trained to redirect such queries to dentists. It can thus lighten a load of the dentist while also assuring timely assistance to patients regardless of the hours of calling. It can also streamline the process of finding dentists online. The patients can directly communicate on the dentist’s website and evaluate budget, specialties, etc. to determine if that’s the right fit for them.

These chat transcripts can also be used as mission-critical data for various commercial and in-house research purposes.

Voice search friendly

A large number of people use mobile devices and voice search to locate a dentist near them. One thing to consider here is that unlike dentists or experts’ the laymen don’t know the technical terms of dentistry. Hence a voice search needs to support common, jargon-free human language. Here ML- a branch of AI provides a precise solution in the form of NLP that is apt at understanding the conversational human language and provides accurate results matching the search intent.

It allows a voice search user to immediately get key information like location, hours of working, expertise/specializations, fees, and other details including directions on how to reach specie dental clinic or the nearest options.
