Terml.io’s domain name is not changing

In a departure from what we said earlier in the year, we are actually keeping Terml.io’s eponymous domain name. Here’s why:

  • Terml.io is in the red. (This is expected: we don’t charge any money for anything anymore.) But money isn’t the object of an educational service. At least not ours. So we don’t need to move to something cheaper.
  • Moving it is going to be a pain for us.
  • Moving will reducing our user base to near zero.
  • MyWikis is not a normal business. MyWikis supports startups that make a positive impact on the world. We do not invest our profits aggressively and we do not rapidly expand. We support what is good intentioned but needs that extra boost. We will do so until we cannot. And that is precisely what we will do with Terml.io: support it.

Justin and I have poured lots of time into making Terml.io a powerful tool for students to use. My previous decision to move the domain of Terml.io was made quickly and hastily, without deeply considering our passion for and the potential impact of Terml.io. I apologize for this.

Terml.io, at this point, need not be sustained financially, but if anyone wishes to contribute features, the following would help improve our service tremendously:

  • access to an API with relevant, concise definitions for most, if not all, kinds of definitions.
  • a scraping tool that accesses Google’s search functionality to find the most relevant definitions and retrieves them for use in Terml.io.
  • natural-language processing.

As always, donations are accepted; please email contact@mywikis.com if you are interested in scheduling a donation to Terml.io.
