RFP: Data Backup Solution

Proposal due by: 2020/04/24
Company Name:

Project Overview

When setting up a new node or in any cases where unforeseen events where existing data becomes corrupted, one has to utilize the P2P network to re-sync from the genesis block to the most current block. However, seeing as the current Columbus-3 network has already surpassed 1 million blocks, the minimum time requirement already exceeds several days. If there was a solution where block data would backed up every few days, then the time needed to re-setup a node would be reduced to less than an hour.

Current Roadblocks to Success

  1. Currently data backup solution periods are too long, thereby reducing any real practicality
  2. As of Columbus-3, data is reaching up to nearly 100GB

Project Goals

Terraform Labs is looking for a partner to provide the aforementioned data backup service, which we believe will not only reduce resync time, but also would be crucial for the stability of running various user-facing products on the Terra blockchain in the future.

  1. Periodic backups will lower the barrier of entry for those who want to participate in the Columbus network as a service provider.
  2. Data backup solution should help towards reducing service delays in any unforeseen scenarios for (non-)validator nodes.
  3. By providing various backup solutions corresponding to pruning options (syncable, nothing, everything), the reliability and availability will be improved, thereby also achieving higher serviceability.

Scope of Work

Potential partners will be expected to provide a detailed, technical plan and approach when suggesting a Terra data backup solution.

  1. Product Definition: Potential partners should provide a brief summary on how the suggested solution will improve stability (data corruption check) and usability (download interface and speed). Moreover, technical specifications should include to what extent and frequency that the data backup will be guaranteed. Moreover, any perceived potential roadblocks should be mentioned as well. Necessary support from TFL can also be added in this section.
  2. Schedule & Milestones: Partners should provide an action plan/timeline of expected progress (ex. T+30 for researching and polishing the solution, T+60 for start of development, T+120 for launching the data backup solution, etc.)
  3. Reports: For effective operations management and analytics on both Terra and the partner’s end, short periodic will need to be submitted.
  4. Deliverables: In rough chronological order, a (1) basic development/solution plan, (2) product specifications, (3) reports, and most importantly (4) service launch are expected.
  5. End product: The most important characteristics required by Terra’s Data Backup solution are the stability and usability of the solution service as well as the effectiveness of operation management.

Evaluation Metrics and Criteria

  1. Ability of partner to fulfill the requirements listed above and provide an actionable solution plan
  2. Degree of assurance for stability and usability
  3. Periodic data backup frequency
  4. Team with a strong track record of service development and solutions implementation

Submission Requirements

  1. Brief description of company and core team members
  2. Description of solution service or product
  3. Outline of development plan/process
  4. Outline of necessary resources including a development timeline
