“Mindfulness is a way of befriending ourselves and our experience.”

Recently, a Canadian research published in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Mental Health has identified Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programs as a potentially great tool for improving the mental health of adolescents who are experiencing serious mental health concerns (Vliet, et al., 2017).

But what is MBSR exactly, and how could it improve mental health?

MBSR is a psycho-educational and experiential program, it was initially designed for reducing stress associated with having a life threatening medical condition. Its success lead to its use in alleviating stress related to a broader spectrum of psychological and physical concerns. Typically, MBSR consist of 8–10-day group sessions led by a mental health professional. The training involves learning skills that have been constructed to foster openness, awareness and living moment to moment.

The truth is that the relation between Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and improvement of mental health symptomology and quality of life is not a new concept to science. The importance of this research is related to the population it examined, which involved a sample of Canadian adolescents who had all received a mental health diagnosis, including 86% with comorbid mental health conditions. The examination of the impact of MBSR on this group of 26 youth resulted in reports of improved mood, enhanced relationship to self, increased self-control, improving problem-solving, awareness of the present, and enhanced interpersonal abilities.

The findings on MBSR keep growing and it certainly looks very promising for Canadians.
