At Terracotta Travel, nothing brings us more joy than crafting unforgettable journeys for families who cherish precious moments together. Recently, Zack entrusted us to plan a trip for his parents and wife, Kiley, across Italy. They explored impressive monuments, creating lifelong memories and experiences together. To share their Italian adventure authentically, meet our guest, Kiley, who will transport you to the enchanting places they visited.

They say the third time’s a charm, but I must confess that the first two times I visited Italy were equally enchanting. It’s one of those places that never fails to captivate — with endless new sights and experiences, each trip feels as exciting as the first. Recently, my husband, in-laws, and I embarked on an unforgettable journey through the magical city of Venice, the breathtaking landscapes of Lake Garda, the artistic wonders of Florence, and the timeless allure of Rome, discovering beautiful towns along the way. In this travel blog, I’ll share our recommendations and tips to make your Italian adventure an extraordinary one, with a perfect combination of comfort, exploration, and embracing unexpected moments and hidden gems. Let’s delve into the immersive experiences of this extraordinary journey. Andiamo!

Venice: The Enchanting City of Canals

Venice beckons you to get lost in its wonders; and do so in its quieter, less-traveled neighborhoods, where you truly uncover the essence of this city. But don’t miss out on Venice’s iconic sites. At the Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), delve into the captivating blend of Venetian Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles that reveal the rich political, cultural, and artistic history of Venice. We highly recommend booking tickets in advance — this allowed us to bypass the queues and delve straight into the wonders within.

It will forever amaze me how an entire city can float on water. To truly appreciate this remarkable feat of engineering, we went gliding along the labyrinthine canals in a gondola to explore away from the crowds, enveloped in an intimate and romantic ambience. This feeling was then echoed at the Hotel Papadopoli, an elegant establishment infused with traditional Venetian culture, perfectly situated along the Grand Canal.

Venturing beyond the city’s boundaries, embark on a private boat tour to the surrounding islands. Murano, renowned for its exquisite glass-blowing industry, and Burano, famous for its vibrant array of colorful houses and intricate lacework, offer the perfect escape from the bustling city, and you may find yourself acquiring unique pieces of artwork to cherish.

Lake Garda: Northern Italy’s Enchanting Jewel

Nestled in the northern part of Italy, Lake Garda is home to stunning natural landscapes and charming towns. To truly immerse ourselves in the ethereal beauty of the Lake, we embarked on a private boat tour. Drifting across the glistening waters, a sense of tranquility washed over us, as we raised a toast with glasses of prosecco in hand. The picturesque landscapes unfolded before our eyes, as majestic mountains embraced the shimmering lake, creating an idyllic symphony of nature’s marvels. Along the way, we had the option to explore the quaint towns nestled along the lake’s shores.

Along our journey in northern Italy, we embarked on an unforgettable detour to Pianalto — a place dear to our hearts as it holds the ancestral roots of my husband’s family. If you have a connection to Italian heritage, I urge you to include an ancestral stop on your itinerary; for us, this sojourn became the crown jewel of our trip, immersing us in the rich tapestry of our family history.

Our exploration led us to the enchanting peninsula of Sirmione. The Scaliger Castle stands tall, guarding secrets of the past, while ongoing discoveries of Roman ruins at the adjacent archaeological dig add to its mystique. Amid the history and elegance of Villa Cortine and its sprawling grounds, we reveled in a symphony of sculptures, statues, and fountains that painted a mesmerizing backdrop against the breathtaking vistas of Lake Garda.

Florence: A Captivating Journey of Art, Culture, and Culinary Delights

Full of artistic treasures and architectural wonders, Florence is one of my favorite cities in the world. During our stay, we found ourselves enchanted by The Place Firenze, a luxury contemporary hotel with an onsite bar that crafted the perfect spritz cocktail for us. Its prime location just a short walk from the Duomo and other captivating sights made it an ideal base for exploration.

Climbing the towering Duomo made for an unforgettable experience, one that got our hearts racing — firstly due to the lengthy ascent up some narrow stairs, and secondly thanks to the awe-inspiring panoramic views of the city. It was moments like this that drew us closer together as a family as we looked out to the horizon, almost touching the sky. To avoid crowds, I recommend purchasing tickets ahead of time and arriving early in the morning — catching a sunrise up here would just make this extra special.

With our feet firmly back on the ground, I enjoyed wandering the many small boutiques and high-end fashion stores, and perusing the work of talented local artists. Florence really is a utopia of style and elegance for both men and women.

During our gastronomic escapades, we stumbled upon Pine&Apple, an exquisite Asian fusion restaurant that quickly became one of our all-time favorites. Such was our delight that we found ourselves returning for three consecutive days, magnetized by the exceptional food and impeccable service.

Despite my love of Florence, I found my heart longing for the rolling hills and picturesque vineyards of Tuscany. Hiring a driver allowed us to traverse the multicolored landscape and discover charming medieval towns. A highlight of our adventure was Casa Emma, a local winery where we enjoyed an unforgettable tour and cooking class.

Rome: Where Ancient Ruins Meet Modern Charm

Rome, the Eternal City, is a beguiling blend of history and contemporary culture. Whether you choose to embark on a guided tour or explore on your own, this city offers a wealth of treasures to explore. Our stay at Villa Spalletti Trivelli, located next to the presidential palace, added an extra layer of charm — made all the more memorable by the owner’s personal tales of its storied past.

Step back in time as you wander through the iconic corridors of the unmissable Colosseum. To avoid crowds, I highly recommend booking tickets in advance. For a more comprehensive and immersive experience, book a private tour with an expert guide who can bring the stories of the gladiators and ancient spectacles to life. Don’t forget to include a visit to the Roman Forum, as it beautifully complements the Colosseum experience.

The Vatican City is another must-see. Marvel at the intricate details and breathtaking beauty of St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums, home to renowned masterpieces like the Sistine Chapel. Once again, a private tour is highly recommended to maximize your experience; bypassing the long lines, we were able to fully immerse ourselves in the grandeur and artistry of these remarkable sites.

Almost hidden from sight in the heart of Rome, the Pantheon is another architectural marvel, and one of the best-preserved ancient Roman structures. From inside, the magic and spirituality cascade down on you through its stunning domed roof and oculus. No ticket is required to enter here, adding to its magic. I suggest combining a visit to the Pantheon with the nearby Trevi Fountain, where you can make a wish at the fountain’s edge before tossing a coin over your shoulder into its clear water. Round off your perfect day with a sweet treat from one of the gelaterias that dot the route.

The Role of a Travel Agent: Debunking Myths and Embracing Expertise

First and foremost, let me emphasize the importance of hiring a travel agent. There are common misconceptions that travel agents are expensive and unnecessary in the digital age. The truth is that travel agents can be your secret weapon in finding cost-effective options and exclusive deals, potentially saving you money in the long run. Experts in their field, they can recommend the best destinations based on your preferences, craft customized itineraries that suit your interests, arrange transportation that fits your needs, book tours and activities to make the most of your time, provide options for travel insurance, and offer invaluable advice. But perhaps most importantly, they are your lifeline if anything goes awry during your trip. Safety and peace of mind are truly priceless.

It’s time to debunk these myths and recognize the invaluable role that travel agents play in simplifying the travel planning process and enhancing the overall experience. With their expertise and insider knowledge, they can ensure that every aspect of your journey is seamlessly arranged, leaving you free to embrace the joys of exploration without stress or worry.

So, take the leap and enlist the services of a travel agent. Trust me, it will be one of the best decisions you make for your next journey. Let them work their magic, and get ready to embark on an extraordinary adventure like no other.

Embracing the Magic: Our Experience with Terracotta Travel

This was our inaugural experience working with Anna from Terracotta Travel, and let me assure you, it certainly won’t be our last. She bestowed upon our family the gift of a meticulously planned and exquisitely executed vacation. The dedication and attention to detail she poured into every aspect of this trip are truly remarkable. Our journey proved to be a harmonious blend of relaxation and exhilaration, all infused with a touch of luxury. The accommodations left us breathless, the transitions from one city to another were flawlessly orchestrated, and Anna’s communication throughout the entire planning process and during our time in Italy was beyond compare.

Extra Tips

Converters and Adapters: Remember that converters and adapters are different. It’s best to order them in advance from the United States and bring both to ensure you can charge any medical equipment or other devices with a specific voltage requirement which may not be as universally compatible as a mobile phone, laptop or iPad. It’s important to check the voltage requirements of the specific electrical device you will use before using it internationally.

Electronic devices: iPads, phones, and laptops are generally designed to be compatible with a wide range of voltages worldwide. They typically have built-in power adapters or chargers that can handle voltages ranging from 100 volts to 240 volts. This means they can be used in countries with different electrical systems without the need for a voltage converter.

Embrace Spontaneity: While it’s great to have dinner reservations for some special occasions, don’t be afraid to leave some room for serendipity. Some of the best dining experiences we had were at charming restaurants we stumbled upon while exploring. So, be open to following your instincts and asking locals for recommendations.

Seek Local Insights: Locals often have the best insider knowledge when it comes to food and shopping. Don’t hesitate to strike up conversations and ask for their advice. You might discover hidden gems that are off the beaten path and truly authentic.

Comfortable Footwear: Exploring Italy often involves walking and exploring historical sites. It’s advisable to wear closed-toe sneakers or comfortable walking shoes to keep your feet supported and protected while enjoying the cobblestone streets and attractions.

Stay Hydrated: If you’re traveling to Italy during the summer, the heat can be intense. To prevent dehydration, consider bringing liquid IV packs to add to your water bottles. These packs replenish electrolytes and can help you stay hydrated during your adventures.

Italy’s countless wonders are waiting to be explored, from the enchanting canals of Venice to the artistic richness of Florence. Embrace the charm of each destination and allow yourself to be swept away by the allure of Italy. Buon Viaggio!
