Extraordinary Caves you can Rappel, Snorkel, and Hike in Around Mallorca

Intrepid Explorers on a Sea Caving Expedition — Anna Mascaro and Jenna Young

Mallorca’s east coast, famed for its spectacular white-sand calas is also home to a secret subterranean wonderland.

Beginning at Cala Romantica, Juan, our local guide and outdoor enthusiast with infinite island knowledge took us on a once-in-a-lifetime sea caving adventure. Once suitably kitted-up, we followed a barely-there trail through bushes and pine trees, where tortoise idle at your feet and kid goats bleat sweetly, eventually emerging at the edge of the cliffy eastern coastline, eye-wateringly beautiful in the morning sun.

Weaving down to the subtly pink-tinged sand of a secret beach, we dipped into the crystalline water and relished the absolute serenity of the untouched beach, before wrestling our way into a wetsuit and heading up to the plateau atop the white cliffs.

With the sea glittering hundreds of feet below, the only (well, the most thrilling!) way down is to abseil — carabiners firmly locked in place, feet pressing on the rocks, we slowly leaned back and teetered over the edge before Juan sent us soaring in a rush of adrenaline to gently plunge into the turquoise.

After a short swim, the cliffs form a great arch overhead and just when it seems like there’s nowhere else to go, we arrived at a little hidden opening to swim through. With Juan’s reassuring-hand ever in reach, we dove through the water-filled hole and emerged into Cuevas des Coloms, where an immense space opened up and our footsteps on the sandy carpet echoed through the sparkling expanse of creamy-white stalagmites and stalactites.

With every little intricacy of the cave taking thousands upon thousands of years to form, Juan demonstrates the utmost sensitivity to the incredible environment as we journeyed through a bewildering labyrinth of chambers, corridors and sublime ice-blue lakes whose chilly waters awakened us to the core. After squeezing through forests of rock columns, swimming luminous waters, passing wild sculptures and ducking under elaborate frenzies of stalagmites, the pathway, somehow, arrived back at the cave entrance.

We emerged back out into the calm open ocean feeling like intrepid explorers, and floated back to the outside world in the warmth of the afternoon sun.
