Welcome Back My Road-Trippin’ Passengers:

Adam and Alyssa wearing UCSB gear at UCSB

Last week I took my son Adam and his girlfriend Alyssa to Southern California for some college tours. We walked around Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and both decided against it due to the location and the feel of the campus. After staying the night in Santa Barbara, we walked around Santa Barbara City College (they loved the location and the feel of the campus and with an automatic pathway to UC Santa Barbara what’s not to like?) and then had a formal tour of UC Santa Barbara. It is now Adam’s first choice and I am wondering if I should join him to get my PhD (he was horrified by the idea). What a beautiful and welcoming campus and who wouldn’t want to be that close to the beach?

We continued our trek down to LA and discovered an amazing restaurant called Rascal near Wilshire and La Brea (we went two nights in a row). Adam and Alyssa toured USC while I met with an EIR at Alfred E. Mann Institute of Biomedical Engineering. They both thought the campus was too big and pretentious. It’s just as important to find out what you don’t want as what you do. After a tour at Loyola-Marymount, which was quite impressive, Adam has decided that it is now his #2 choice but still wants to take a look at schools in San Diego.

They were delightful to travel with (except for having to deal with Adam’s hacked PayPal account) and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to take them both to see colleges as they move towards the next stages in their lives. What a wonderful time for them as they get to start something new; an opportunity to redefine who they are and what they want to be in the world. They get to reinvent themselves in a new environment as they continue to discover who they are.

In-Flight Entertainment: Dorie Clark

Tuesday Interview: This week’s guest, Dorie Clark, is an ‘expert at self-reinvention and helping others make changes in their lives’ according to the New York Times. Dorie shared her playbook on how to get heard above the noise to be recognized as a thought leader. She believes that the best ideas should be heard, not just the loudest.
