Piloting Your Life: In-Flight Entertainment (I’m Feeling Yummy Head to Toe) (July 23, 2019)

What comes to mind when you see these women? I bet it’s not what we really are. These four women are angel investors, investing our own money (unlike VCs who invest OPM…other people’s money) into startups with products and services we want to see in the world. We represented a little less than half of the female investors (total of 9) at an angel summit in Napa this past week where there were a total of about 70 investors. We are helping to change the image of angel investors from just white bros, to something a lot more diverse and accessible (yes, we are all white but we are all working on that, too).
While at the angel summit, I was talking to a few guys (might have been at the poker table or at breakfast) and realized that the male investors have it easy; they get to focus almost exclusively on investing while most of the female investors I know are working to make the funding and startup ecosystem easier and more accessible to women. We are working to change the world; to level the playing field. And it’s exhausting. I’m not saying I am going to give up but with this realization, I am going to make sure that I am kinder and gentler with myself and set better expectations.
On a related note, I met with Maren Bannon of Jane VC (I am an LP in her fund) to talk about what they have invested in, what their plans are to help female founders, and ways we can work together to continue to level the playing field for women.
I first met Maren a few years ago when I was just getting started in angel investing and she was raising money for her startup. She’s since sold her startup, moved to London (and is now moving to Amsterdam) and has started a VC fund with her fellow Stanford Business School grad friend Jen Neundorfer. She was lovely enough to meet me in Redwood City and I took advantage of the close proximity and nice weather and rode my other red ride downtown.
And I almost forgot…Piloting Your Life (the book) is now available for pre-order. The ebook can be ordered on various platforms for $.99 until Thursday at 5 PM at which point the price goes up to $9.99. The paperback and audio book will be available for order on September 1st. The countdown is on! The marketing engine is ramping up and we are brainstorming ways to get the book into as many hands as possible because, after all, this isn’t just a book, it’s a movement!
