Piloting Your Life: In-Flight Entertainment (Mother F%#$^&* Girl Power) (May 7, 2018)
Welcome Back My Powerful Passengers:
This week I started an online VC class called Venture Deals put on by Brad Feld and Jason Mendelson (it’s a companion class to their book Venture Deals which I highly recommend). Our first tasks included watching a few videos (gotta love class videos that are less than 5 minutes each) and creating or joining a team. Since I am not much of a joiner, I created my own team called Class Bravo. I looked through the list of participants and sent emails to all of the women that were showing locations on the West Coast and showed interest in healthcare inviting them to join my team. Before long we reached our max of 7 and had more interest than we could handle so I suggested that one of the gals create a second one so we could find a way to collaborate (she created West Coast Digital Health Mavens). Actually, I hope all of the women participating in the class find a way to connect so we can all support one another. I’ve already connected on LinkedIn with about a dozen of them.
When I was in high school, I always got along better with guys and this continued through my twenties and thirties. And yet now, in my forties, I am finding myself not only surrounded by amazing women, but actively searching for ways to be around more. This isn’t to say that there aren’t amazing men in my life because there are, and just this week I had a great call with someone (Owais!) who is one of my biggest cheerleaders despite the fact we only met last fall (ironically enough at a SheWorx event). Right now, especially, there is something so energizing about the growing power of women. It feels so good and I am optimistic that we are shifting the power and energy in a more positive direction.
I had the pleasure of recording a short promo video for The Guild’s Serendipity conference in the fall and we got a great picture with the woman behind the media (Kirsty), the Guild’s founder (Anne), and Puppy Mama herself (Theresa)(episodes 29and 31) and of course we had to have Theresa’s puppy in the picture too. I am so looking forward to the two day conference in San Francisco in October. If you are an accredited investor and want to be one of the lucky 40 attending the angel investor track, sign right up. If you aren’t interested in investing, there are a half a dozen other salons (tracks) to choose from so check it out!
And if you’ve always wanted to know what a VC does all day, check out this hilarious video.
In-Flight Entertainment: Amy Chang
One of my goals is to create a mesh network of like-minded investors looking to get more money into the hands of founders who have startups with products and services for the rest of us…where there is significant demand and market opportunity. These founders don’t match the pattern that typical VCs look for and therefore have a harder time getting access to capital. This is not because their ideas or experience aren’t up to snuff. I was thrilled to talk about this with my guest this week, Amy Chang. Amy is based in San Diego and she, too, didn’t realize that angel investing was an option until about three years ago (just like me). We are both actively trying to get more women introduced to angel investing because, money is power and, well, we need more mother fucking girl power!
