We’re Not Going To Take It…Anymore: PYL In-Flight: July 8, 2022

Welcome Back My Privileged Passengers:

Are you barely hanging on these days? Struggling to find the joy at a time when the world seems to be crumbling? Feeling guilty for living your life and momentarily forgetting the onslaught of bad shit happening seemingly every five minutes?

If so, you are not alone.

Even those of us who are truly privileged are feeling the traumatic effects as we see our rights, freedoms, financial and physical security dissolve.

I see folks posting on social media about deleting apps from their mobile devices to take a break to recharge before taking on the next wave. I find myself doomscrolling and thinking that might be a good idea for me.

But when I read a post from a Black woman, I am reminded that the color of my skin provides me with the privilege of ‘stepping away’ in a way that she can’t. This is a luxury she doesn’t have and shouldn’t be afforded to me either.

As a white woman, a very privileged one at that, I can’t and won’t step away from the fight.

Our lives (and livelihood) are at stake.

I’m not just referring to my immediate family (Zeke, Adam, Finn) although with Finn having a uterus and belonging to the queer community, we are directly and negatively affected by the dangerous SCOTUS rulings, and uneducated / seriously misguided hate and the policies of the Republican party.

— We are all already suffering from climate change and how we as humans are trashing our planet.

— We are all now potential targets due to lack of effective gun regulation and unchecked white supremacy (domestic terrorism) in the US. Nowhere and no one is safe.

— Our overall life experience is diminished because of media illiteracy and poorly funded education in the US. Just as a rising tide raises all boats, an outgoing tide brings us all down.

— Our futures are limited because of expensive, inadequate, inaccessible, and poorly administered healthcare in the US.

So if you didn’t think you were affected and negatively impacted because of the color of your skin or your body parts (like never having had a uterus) or your sexual orientation, you are wrong.

Monday was 4th of July, a US holiday we’ve historically celebrated to honor the birth of our country. I didn’t see any reason to celebrate at a time when the liberties and freedoms of so many are being taken away to benefit white men and the white women hiding behind the patriarchy.

America has canceled itself.

Now is the time to fight like hell. Fight back as if your life depends on it, because it does. To quote the big-haired, heavily made up rock band popular in the ‘80sTwisted Sister, “we’re not going to take it anymore.” (you might want to check out the video linked below)

Get fired up and volunteer and/or donate to a local campaign. We’ve gotten behind Laura Parmer-Lohan for the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors.

Get fired up and volunteer and/or donate to organizations that will fight for the bodily autonomy for uterus owners. We are donating monthly to Planned Parenthood Mar Monte.

Get vocal when you hear someone say something racist, or sexist, or anti-LGTBQ+ or patriarchal. At the dog park recently, a white man said something about ‘those’ people and while uncomfortable, I challenged him and didn’t let it go unchecked. I shared a few tidbits of info he appeared to be unaware of (in a mostly non-threatening way).

Get vocal and be an advocate for others. My husband Zeke (after many discussions over the last five years) is using his privilege as a cis-het-white man by speaking out for abortion rights and bodily autonomy on social media (mostly Facebook). He also ordered t-shirts with sayings like ‘no uterus, no opinion’ because we uterus owners can’t be the only ones fighting for bodily autonomy for all.

Spend money and/or invest in companies that align with inclusive values and do good things for our society and planet. We started working with a financial planner who put together a list of the publicly traded companies who have invested in anti-abortion activies / organizations so we can find a way to minimize our support of those companies. I actively invest in startups with diverse founding teams and started offering my time as an investor to move a few of them forward on major objectives. We also pay attention to who gets our consumer dollars and intentionally choose companies (when we can) that are more closely aligned with our values.

While this all might appear daunting, imagine what will happen if we don’t all fight like hell.

If you aren’t angry, afraid, overwhelmed, and tired, you aren’t paying attention.

We can’t take it anymore which is why we can’t stand by without taking action.

May you find peace, acceptance, and love today as you navigate being human.

With much love and gratitude,

Terri

P.S. Take the controls and be the pilot in your own life. It’s a beautiful day to fly, and you are cleared for takeoff.
