Today we’re announcing that from 1 November 2020, new versions of TerriaJS and its maps will no longer work in Internet Explorer 11 (IE11). This follows Twitter, YouTube, Microsoft 365 and the Javascript UI library Bootstrap ending support for IE11, as the world moves towards a more modern web.

Maintaining support for IE11 has been difficult and time consuming for us relative to the small number of people who are using it. According to Statcounter, only 1.15% of Australians and 1.17% worldwide used IE11 in the 12 months from July 2019 to July 2020. IE11’s developer tools are outdated, and this makes testing new functionality much harder than it is in other browsers. As Terria maps are updated over the coming months, users will start seeing warnings informing them of this change.

Ending support for IE11 will enable us to start using features that are only available in modern browsers. The Terria team are excited to be able to bring the majority of users a better experience with new versions of our maps.

As always, if this change impacts you, get in touch with us via gitter so we can have a chat.
