From Web3 Brawlers to Sports Gamification

The future of Test Jar Labs.

In August 2022, Test Jar Labs embarked on an ambitious journey with “Ghostie: Battle for the Bones,” a MOBA fighting game that aimed to shift web3 games toward meaningful on-chain conversations. With full-time dedication from the founders and support from 12 part-time contractors, we achieved significant milestones over the next year. However, the journey took an unexpected turn, leading us to pivot towards a new frontier: gamification.

Recap: Ghostie

Ghostie began as a hopeful game in the web3 space. Fueled by passion and the desire to innovate, our team developed an action brawler that integrated on-chain elements to create a game that leveraged the positives of the web3 ethos. Despite our initial success — including a small pre-seed raise, a successful NFT drop, a soft launch, and acceptance into Techstars Crypto Boston — we faced challenges in securing the necessary funding to sustain the game’s development. After a promising start, a significant funding deal fell through, prompting us to rethink our strategy.

Pivoting to “Real” Gamification

Recognizing the limitations of Ghostie in terms of development costs and market reception, we decided to explore other routes.

Our breakthrough came when we began a new project utilizing AI and AR technology to enhance fan engagement in sports. This pivot aligned with our expertise and addressed a significant need within the sports industry: engaging a global audience through innovative gamified content. This project then expanded into applications we never expected.

Note: We noticed that the term “gamification” has been used more generically to describe placing “game elements” (achievements, leveling systems, etc.) into anything that’s not already considered a game. We want to clarify and demonstrate that gamification is much more complex than that. With our new project, we lean into “real” gamification, where we holistically design the product and experience as a game rather than slapping “game elements” onto it and calling it “gamified”. We are writing a piece that further explores our thoughts and approach to gamification. Follow us for updates!

Endless Possibilities

Our new project represents our vision for the future of interactive media. Under the umbrella of MIARC (Move Imitation AR Competition) games, our new project inspires our players to move, compete, earn, and learn.

We plan to expand this foundation beyond its initial scope into other industries, leveraging our technology for brand marketing, consumer engagement, and user generated content. Alongside the use case in gamifying fan engagement in sports, we are launching early access to the beta program for a parallel version of this project, currently referred to as “the Party Game”. After testing at events, our collaborations have set the stage for a broader launch. You can apply for early access to the beta program here.

We aim to become a leader in gamification. We invite you to join us on this exciting journey as we continue to innovate and redefine the future of interactive media.
