Sónar 2018, to be held next June 14 to 16 in Barcelona, will be the 25th edition of the famous Catalan festival. To celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Sónar Festival comes news that knocks on the doors of science fiction. Thanks to a collaboration with the Catalan Institute of Space Studies and the METI, an international organization that deals with attempts to communicate with extraterrestrials, the organizers of the Catalan festival are trying to send a message on GJ273b, the habitable planet closest to the earth .

Sonar celebrates its 25th anniversary by sending a message in search of extraterrestrial intelligence

The first sent message has consisted of 33 tracks of 10 seconds each commissioned specifically for the event by artists from all over the globe who have at least once taken part in the most important Spanish electronic music festival and aims to establish contact with the eventual inhabitants of the planet.

The first part of the message was transmitted via an antenna located in Norway on October 16th and the transmission lasted for three consecutive days. During the three days of communication the tracks created specifically for the Sónar Festival from Autechre, Modeselektor, Laurent Garnier, Holly Herndon, Matmos, Jean-Michel Jarre, Nina Kraviz, Francisco López, The Black Madonna, Kerri Chandler, Ólafur Arnalds alternated , Kode 9, Laurel Halo, Soichi Terada, Fatima Al Qadiri, Cabo San Roque, BFlecha and Nisennenmondai.

The second part of the message will instead be sent during April 2018 and will include, among others Richie Hawtin, Carsten Nicolai, Squarepusher, Kate Tempest, Daito Manabe, Juana Molina, Niño de Elche, Cora Novoa, Lorenzo Senni, Zora Jones, Desert, LCC , Yuzo Koshiro and three tracks chosen through an open call.

The line-up of this Sónar will feature the 2manydjs, which this year will perform together with James Murphy of the LCD Soundsystem in a special show vinyl only that will close the edition “By day” of the festival, Saturday 16 June at Fira Barcelona.
