A $5 million effort to renovate and expand Killeen’s Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery is complete.

The completed renovation work will ensure the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery is worthy of the heroes who rest there for decades to come. The year-long effort installed concrete support sleeves to keep existing and future headstones level and squared. The effort also included adding 4,000 new burial crypts, replacing the capstones on the columbaria, and adding new turf and landscape features such as bushes and trees.

Previous to the work, headstones at the cemetery often required straightening. Sometimes additional sod was added for support. The concrete sleeves will keep the headstones from shifting or tipping. The work was paid for by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery is located on 174 acres previously part of Fort Hood and donated by the federal government. The construction of the cemetery was made possible through the coordination of area Veterans groups, the city of Killeen, the federal government, and the Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB).

The initial phase of development included 7,620 gravesites on 31 acres. The cemetery will eventually be capable of providing a final resting place to more than 50,000 Veterans and their family members.

The VLB has four Texas State Veterans Cemeteries across Texas in Abilene, Corpus Christi, Killeen and Mission. For more information please call 1–800–252-VETS (8387) or visit TexasVeterans.com.
